Ruby Red's Wine Cellar
We currently hold events open to anyone at Ruby Red's wine cellar in Hongqiao. We also host corporate events such as tastings, cocktail classes, competitions and other activities at any venue desired.
The Cellar - A Class 5 Bunker
Ruby Red's wine cellar is located in a traditional Chinese residential block next to the Line 2 Metro station Loushanguan Lu (just after Zhongshan Park station). The cellar is a re-purposed Class 5 bomb shelter, built in the 1970's and capable of withstanding nuclear and chemical attacks. It has 1.5 m thick walls and every exit has two doors, a concave steel portal and a concrete door weighing in at 1.8 tonnes, which can be closed to provide an airtight seal. Other defenses included a self-sustained air filtering system capable of removing harmful chemicals from the air, a huge water tank capable of storing enough fresh water to last 100 people 10 days, and a piping/sewage system that could be closed off to completely isolate the bunker.
While most residential blocks dating from the 70's have some sort of bunker (of Class 1 - 5, where Class 1 were suitable only as protection from air raids), these cellars have often fallen into disuse/ Most have severe moisture problems or serve simply as bicycle sheds. The Ruby Red cellar is remarkable in that it is completely refurbished and is also of the highest Class (5). As such, it can be regarded as a Shanghai "must see" destination in its own right.
